Sneak Peek at Show number 4.

Sneak Peek at Show number 4.

Now that it is 2016 Steve and I will be starting the year off with a special show.
Show number 4 will be about the all time classic shortwave communications receiver , the Yaesu FRG-7.

Why did this radio made in the 1970's turn into a collectible ?
What is special about the design that was uncommon at the time ?
What should we look for when we want to buy one ?
and What should we do when we get it home ?

These questions and many more will be answered in show number 4 on 'The Ham Sandwich' - The Yaesu FRG-7 special.

We hope you will stick around for a serving of that one :-)

  1. I look forward to this episode. I have recently obtained a FRG-7 that is deaf. I suspect the front end FET is toast. Been pretty busy dealing with work and snow accumulation to have a go at playing with this old girl. I have gone ahead got all the caps and even ordered some FET's

  2. Could you guys cover the MOSFET issue and how to test? I have read up some on the topic and how the originals are no longer available. The BF981 SILICON N-CHANNEL DUAL GATE MOSFET's I've received are supposed to be applicable to the FRG-7 but do need to have leads soldered onto them and I am comfortable doing that. (I solder 30gauge wires every day) I would simply wire wrap the flat leads with the 30Ga.
Some have said that it would be a good idea to place a ferrite bead on the drain to keep from going into oscillation?

    2. I have been lucky and never had a blow FET in the frg-7. BUT the Yaesu FT-101 has almost the same setup for a front end. I have one FT-101 that is in need of repair.
I have been looking long and hard a the different FETS
I have yet to try the BF-981. I did see a web page that shows this in the front end of a FT-101. The owner says "It works". The bead, I think I would not use.
So far the "Best FET is the OEM 3SK40M, I placed a order for 100 the other day... So we will see :-)

All the FETs I have tried work, But How well is the question.

    3. Thanks for your input Steve. I have the cart in front of the horse, I still have not started on the cap replacement but I did get a kit of DeoxIT, it is the concentrate of the cleaner enhancer, faderlube and contact cleaner enhancer gold. I am a real fan of alcohol as a cleaner and with great caution at times some WD-40
I am going to replace the caps, I have them all from my good friend that does MoBo repairs as he had them all in stock (good brands too)
The FET can wait until all other avenues have been exhausted, although I have soldered some leads onto one of the BF-981. I kept things really tidy, as I do not need to be adding a "tickler" to the leads that could result in unwanted operation.
